In a Ukrainian women's prison, a young mother will soon have to give up her child to an orphanage unless she finds an alternative.
Lesya is serving a seven-year sentence in Odessa women’s prison in Ukraine for the murder of her husband. Her son Kolya was born in prison. The prisoners’ children are allowed to stay near their mothers until they are three years old. After that they have to go to the orphanage if there is no alternative. Warden Iryna urges Lesya to contact her mother and sister so that they can take care of Kolya.
Slovakian director Péter Kerekes alternates the still image of prison life with (acted) personal interviews with prisoners. 107 Mothers is inspired by the true stories of 107 real mothers serving sentences in Odessa prison.
