Two women try to rebuild their lives shortly after the Second World War in Russia.
Leningrad, 1945. The Second World War leaves great traces in the city. The buildings have been destroyed, the inhabitants have been physically and mentally broken. Between the wreckages are two young women, Iya and Masha, who are trying to rebuild their lives. Iya works as a nurse in a war veteran hospital and takes care of her girlfriend’s son. When Masha returns from the front, they must cope with both old and new trauma.
Beanpole is the second film of Kantemir Balagov (Tesnota), born in 1991. For this he received the Un Certain Regard best director award in 2019 as well as the FIPRESCI prize for international film criticism at the Cannes film festival.
