In the psychological thriller Instinct, Carice van Houten plays Nicoline, a psychologist in a detention centre who becomes entangled in a power game with her client Idris. Idris, played by Marwan Kenzari, is about to go on unescorted leave for the first time. Nicoline is skeptical and tries to prevent his leave, so that Idris slowly transforms into the manipulative man she saw in him from the beginning.
Instinct is the directorial debut of Halina Reijn. The film was praised at the Locarno and Toronto festivals, and is the Dutch entry for the Oscars.
