Coming-of-age story about three teenage sisters with a bipolar mother.
For as long as they can remember, teenage sisters Marion, Claire and Louise have lived to the rhythm of their mother Alice’s moods: sometimes pleasantly disturbed and enterprising, sometimes depressed and toxic. Especially the eldest, Marion, does everything to keep the family together. She would rather spread her wings and go to Brazil to dance. But how can she leave her sisters behind in the destructive spiral in which their mother sinks further every day?
La ruche (translated: the beehive) is the feature debut of Belgian filmmaker Christophe Hermans. For the cinematography, he worked with photographer Lara Gasparotto who is known for her intimate approach to the female body and adolescence. Together with the actors, they bring the loving and explosive relationship between mother and daughters (the youngest of whom is the real daughter of Ludivine Sagnier) to vibrant life.
