In 1750, Louis XV rules the French kingdom. Marquis des Arcis, a notorious womanizer, is hopelessly in love with Madame de La Pommeraye (Cécile de France), an attractive widow. After resisting for so long, she finally accepts him as both a friend and lover. The Marquis, however, soon has enough of her. After two years he proposes that they separate as friends. Madame de La Pommeraye is mad with grief and plots her revenge.
