Intriguing psychological drama about a mother and her missing son.
Ten years have passed since the Spanish Elena (Marta Nieto) spoke to her then six-year-old son Iván. A disturbing phone call from her lost child, all alone on a beach looking for his father. Since then, Elena has lived on the spot where Iván was at that moment, on the French Atlantic coast, near the border with Spain. She runs a beach hut and it seems as if got on with her life. Then, however, she meets the French teenager Jean who, in his appearance, strongly reminds her of her son.
Madre from the Spanish filmmaker and screenwriter Rodrigo Sorogoyen (Que Dios Nos Perdone, El Reino) is based on his award-winning short film Madre, which was nominated for an Oscar. Variety writes: “Rodrigo Sorogoyen expands his Oscar-nominated white-knuckler of a short in a most unexpected way: slower, calmer and imbued with metaphysical mystery.”
