Shabu – English subtitles

Ketelhuis Expat

A funny and touching film about a boy who seems bigger than he is, and about taking responsibility for your actions.

Shabu (14) is a sweet, creative and street smart boy from Rotterdam-South. After he broke his grandmother’s car during a joyride, his whole family was angry with him. He has a summer to make up for it, before his grandmother returns from a holiday in Surinam. His mother suggests he sells ice lollies to pay for the damage, but that doesn’t work. So he comes up with another solution that combines the attractions of the sultry summer, his musical talent and earning money. Will he be able to make his family, and especially his grandmother, proud again?

“I am a little boy from Peperklip”, describes Shabu himself, referring to the famous (and infamous) building in Rotterdam-Zuid in which he grew up. The film’s lively narrative and playful editing accentuate the contradictions of adolescent life: unpolished when life is raw, and a little polished when it needs to shine.
