Criticism of the Western museums by artist Renzo Martens.
When artist Renzo Martens visits the screening of his film Enjoy Poverty at the Tate Modern in London, he notices the Unilver logos everywhere. What is the relationship between Western art museums and these kind of corporations? And more specifically: the connection to the violent nature of the plantation system?
With White Cube Martens makes an attempt to restructure the value chain of art. Together with a group of Congolese plantation workers Martens starts an art project that is eventually declared ‘Best art of the year’ by the New York Times. With the proceeds of their art, the plantation workers buy back the land that was destroyed by Unliver. On this land they build their own museum, designed by OMA.
