Gunnar, an elderly, introverted farmer, is forced to leave his farm in the Icelandic countryside after it is expropriated by the government. Without looking back, he turns his back on his former life and moves into a small apartment in Reykjavik. He feels out of place in the city, but when he meets his equally lonely 10-year-old neighbor, Ari, it marks the beginning of a remarkable, life-changing friendship.
Solitude is an endearing drama about loneliness, humanity, and the power of unexpected friendships. Director Ninna Pálmadóttir subtly sketches a coming-of-age story that transcends age and demonstrates the importance of human connection. Her humane perspective permeates the film as she contrasts the beautiful Icelandic landscape with pressing themes such as urbanization and migration.
