Gloria! | Italian Cineclub

Italian Cineclub

Kostuumdrama nabij Venetië waarin vijf meisjes in een weeshuis strijden tegen het patriarchale systeem van de 18e eeuw.

Flavio Aulino on the movie he selected for this month:
LITTLE BIG WOMEN IN SEARCH OF FREEDOM.
Margherita Vicario showed remarkable artistic courage with her modern, unconventional, and lighthearted debut film set in the 19th century. The story revolves around a group of young women living in an orphanage in Veneto called Sant’Ignazio. It explores their journey of self-discovery and their passionate love for music, which becomes a means of emancipation.
During this time, the Veneto conclave elected a new pope, Pius VII, who decided to celebrate his appointment by touring the churches in the region, culminating in a concert at Sant’Ignazio. Maestro Perlina, portrayed by the legendary Paolo Rossi, is a weary and jaded priest tasked with composing the music for the concert. However, he is facing a creative crisis, struggling for inspiration, and takes his frustration out on the choir girls. A young mute servant girl from the Institute offers an unexpected solution to his dilemma.
The cast features talented young actresses alongside notable co-stars, including Paolo Rossi, Natalino Balasso, who returns to cinema after years, and Elio from the band Elio e le Storie Tese, who showcases his acting talents once more. Music plays a crucial role in the film, with the score composed by Vicario, who is also a singer-songwriter. This winning combination has garnered significant acclaim from both critics and audiences.
Gloria! has been showcased at numerous national and international festivals and has won several awards, including the Nastro d’Argento and Globo d’Oro for Best Soundtrack, the Globo d’Oro for Best First Feature, the Jury Prize at the Seattle Film Festival, and Best Director at the Festival du Film de Demain.
