Flavio Aulino on the movie he selected for this month:

A bittersweet (and real) story that touches the heart

After watching a movie, it happens very rarely to keep thinking about the characters who have been on the screen, become attached to their nature and personalities, and want to know how their stories end. It happens only with memorable movies, and this is just one of them.

A failed actor (played by Antonio Albanese in one of his best performances), reduced to dubbing porn movies for a living, ends up taking a job in a small provincial prison: he will have to teach a theater course for some inmates. Antonio, until then frustrated and disillusioned, regains enthusiasm. Impressed by the commitment and dedication of the boys, he decides to set his sights high: he will stage a classic of contemporary theater, Beckett’s ‘Waiting for Godot,’ because ‘if there is one thing inmates know how to do, it’s waiting, that’s all they do…’

It is challenging to talk about prisons and detention without falling into pietism and drama, especially when actual events inspire the story. Milani and Astori (co-writer of the film), thanks also to an outstanding cast, succeed brilliantly, giving us one of the best Italian films of the last year.
