Little Trouble Girls is a sensual and intimate coming-of-age drama about sexual awakening and Catholic shame. The film marks the impressive directorial debut of Urška Djukić.
Introverted 16-year-old Lucia (Jara Sofija Ostan) joins her Catholic school’s girls’ choir, where she friends Ana-Maria (Mina Švajger). When the choir travels to a countryside monastery to rehearse, one of the construction workers restoring the building catches Lucia’s eye. This tests her friendship with Ana-Maria and the other girls. The unfamiliar environment and her awakening sexuality leave Lucia feeling unsettled and put a strain on the choir.
Little Trouble Girls received the FIPRESCI Award at the Berlin Film Festival and won Best Cinematography at the Tribeca Film Festival. The Guardian awarded the film 5 stars, while Variety described it as “a quiet hothouse of youthful desires, mean-girl tensions and hovering Catholic guilt.”
