Paul geeft zijn succesvolle carrière als fotograaf op om zich aan zijn werkelijke passie te wijden: schrijven. De verkoop van zijn boeken valt echter tegen, waardoor zijn middelen op raken en de twijfel toeslaat. Om rond te komen neemt hij baantjes aan als klusser, wat aanvankelijk behoorlijk ontnuchterend werkt, maar uiteindelijk schrijfinspiratie brengt.

À pied d’oeuvre is een intiem portret over de prijs van artistieke vrijheid en de kwetsbaarheid van een Parijse kunstenaar.
Regisseur en actrice Valérie Donzelli (L’amour et les forêts) debuteerde in de competitie van Venetië met het waargebeurde À pied d’oeuvre (internationale titel At work) en won er de award voor Beste Scenario. De Franse dramafilm is gebaseerd op de gelijknamige autobiografie en bestsellerroman van Franck Courtes. Met een hoofdrol voor Bastien Bouillon (Partir un jour, Le comte de Monte-Cristo) als Paul Marquet, die een krachtige en ontroerende vertolking neerzet van een fotograaf die compromisloos kiest voor het schrijverschap en daarmee een bestaan in de marge van de samenleving. Andere rollen zijn voor André Marcon en Virginie Ledoyen, regisseur Valérie Donzelli speelt ook de ex-vrouw van Paul.

Paul gives up his successful career as a photographer to devote himself to his true passion: writing. However, book sales are disappointing, causing his resources to dwindle and doubt to set in. To make ends meet, he takes on jobs as a handyman—an experience that is initially sobering but ultimately provides newfound inspiration for his writing. À pied d’oeuvre is an intimate portrait of the price of artistic freedom and the vulnerability of a Parisian artist.
Director and actress Valérie Donzelli (L’amour et les forêts) debuted in the Venice competition with the true-to-life À pied d’oeuvre (international title: At Work), where she won the award for Best Screenplay. This French drama is based on the eponymous autobiography and bestselling novel by Franck Courtes. Starring Bastien Bouillon (The Night of the 12th, The Count of Monte Cristo) as Paul Marquet, the film offers a powerful and moving portrayal of a photographer who chooses the writer’s life without compromise, leading to an existence on the fringes of society. Supporting roles are played by André Marcon and Virginie Ledoyen, with director Valérie Donzelli also appearing as Paul’s ex-wife.
