Mémoire de fille | Soirée Ciné

Based on Annie Ernaux's autobiographical novel, this French drama follows a writer reflecting on a painful first sexual experience in 1958 and its lifelong psychological impact.

Soirée Ciné

Paris, 2020. Annie Ernaux is invited to a book signing in Rouen, the city where she grew up. This return brings her back to the summer of 1958, when she was seventeen and a half.

As a girl from a Catholic family in rural France, Annie wants to break free from her familiar surroundings. She takes a job as a counselor at a summer camp, determined to gain new experiences and push her boundaries. But reality turns out differently. Among the other counselors, Annie stands out for her innocence and naivety, quickly making her a target. The slightly older, handsome head counselor chooses Annie as his next conquest and seduces her into going to bed with him. It is Annie’s first sexual experience, but losing her virginity is anything but tender.

The experience continues to haunt her for decades, with the shame and humiliation leaving deep scars on her identity. By returning to her past, Annie tries to better understand the seventeen-year-old girl she once was, and to discover how memories can permanently lodge themselves in the body.
