Austrian 'enfant terrible' Ulrich Seidl follows a man who leaves for Romania to work with orphans, hoping to channel his paedophilic feelings.
Ewald – the brother of schlager singer Richie Bravo from Seidl’s Rimini – moved to Romania years ago. Now in his 40s, he wants to start with a clean slate. He leaves his girlfriend and moves inland. Together with some local boys, he transforms a dilapidated school building so that local children can enjoy this new place. However, the other villagers are suspicious and confront Ewald with the bitter truth.
Seidl blends his stumbling characters into the environment. Sometimes through precisely chosen compositions, sometimes soberly recording.
Ulrich Seidl makes you feel empathy for a tragic paedophile in Sparta.
