Summer, 1974. It is the day after the lost World Cup final between Germany and the Netherlands. The streets are quiet and the city is hungover. Jonas runs into Daan and although they are not friends, they hang out together on this dull summer day. After all, they are both looking for their classmate Karsten, each with their own reason. Meanwhile, Catootje’s disappearance hangs over the boys like a dark cloud. Some summers you never forget.
Toen We Van De Duitsers Verloren is the film adaptation of Guido van Driel’s graphic novel of the same name. In 1974, a girl disappeared from the class of van Driel, who was 12 at the time, and the Dutch team suffered a traumatic defeat. Van Driel processed those two events in what he calls his most personal film to date.
